Procedures and Fees
Lane Whitney works closely with customers to create a portrait that will fully satisfy a customer’s wishes. The artist’s portraits are completed in oil on fine linen canvas.  

Throughout the portrait process, Lane seeks to learn about a subject’s personality and interests in order to best capture these in the work of art. Essentially, there is a progression of steps when commissioning a portrait.

First, an initial meeting or phone call is scheduled to discuss the general wishes the customer envisions for the portrait, such as medium, size, pose, lighting, setting, background, and expression. Price options, the financial agreement, and steps to creating a portrait are discussed in detail.  Once the customer  commissions a portrait, a financial agreement is signed and a 50% deposit is due.

Next, a photography session is scheduled. Lane mainly works from photographs of the subject when creating a portrait. Personal sittings may also be required. Excellent lighting is essential in making a quality portrait. Natural vs. studio lighting, interior and exterior scenes, and the time of year, dictate at what time of day the photography session is required. The photography session may take one to two hours. Customers are asked to help choose the images which best captures the personality and desired look of the subject.

The time it takes to complete a portrait is dependent upon other portrait commissions in progress, as well as the size and complexity of the portrait. Once the painting is completed and the customer is satisfied, the final payment is paid upon receipt of the work of art. Customers have thirty days after the delivery of a portrait to request in writing any further changes they would like made to the portrait at no extra cost.

Prices do not include any applicable sales tax, shipping, framing, lodging, and travel expenses. Any of these additional extra expenses are paid when the final payment of the portrait is due. Lane is happy to assist customers in making framing decisions for the portrait.
